Help with value labels

Hi
I have an inventory that has 13 parts. Each part has 8 items. Each item is scored on a scale from 1 to 7. In other words, the student should get a score between 1 and 7. The scoring for each scale is almost the same; 6 categories of styles (very high = 6.2 to 7, high = 5.6 to 6.1, 5 high middle 5.1 to 5.5, and so on so forth). The question now is how to put those on SPSS value labels as I want to see the difference between high scorers and low scorers in other dependent variables. Please advise.

It's unclear to me what your variables are. You can only label variables.
Would you describe your variables for us.

There should be thirteen variables (representing the 13 parts of the inventory). Now, each students gets a score on each of the 13 parts. I said in my first email that each student in each part will get a score range (very high = 6.2 to 7, high = 5.6 to 6.1, 5 high middle
5.1 to 5.5, and so on so forth). I tried to insert these values in the value label but I couldn't I hope I am clear enough.

I am not using the syntax. I just need to know how to insert those ranges of scores in the value labels dialog box. My purpose, again, is to see the differenc between different levels of scorers (high, middle, and low scorers).

Mark,

If your data is in the format of say "6.1" or "5.6" or "5.1" then you need to use RECODE to group those ranges into your 3 different categories or levels of scorers. It seems you are trying to accomplish that in the dialog box instead. You might be trying to type in, for example, 6.1 in the "value" box and then SPSS rounds that immediately to a 6, etc. That wouldn't work for what you need.

Does this make sense?

No rounding is done within the value labels dialog box! If you wanted labels
for all these discrete values than you would have to enter each value and
provide duplicate labels. On the other hand, it appears that you want to
create three groups and for that you need to recode the variables. Choose
the Recode Into dialog from the Transformations menu. Add ranges of values
to the list of recoded values and label the new values to low, low middle,
middle, etc. Then use the Value Labels dialog to label your newly collapsed
variables. The syntax created should look something like this:

RECODE v1 v2 v3 v4 ... (lowest thru 4 = 1)(4 thru 5.5=2)(5.5 thru 6.1=3)...
into newv1 newv2 newv3 ....
VALUE LABELS newv2 newv2 newv4...1 "Lowest" 2 "Low-middle" 3 "middle" ...

Where v1 to v13 are your existing variables, the ranges are what you enter,
and the new variables are what you name them in the RECODE statement.

You'll find that most users on the list use syntax and it is very difficult
to give you instructions for dialog boxes but very easy to give pieces of
syntax. So if you're going to rely on the list for help, you're definitely
going to have to learn syntax and how to run it.
