How Do I Suggest SPSS Improvements

Donald Macnaughton

Dear List,

I would like to propose some changes to the SPSS for the developers.  How do I go about proposing the changes in a way that’s sure to reach the developers?  Is there some way of doing this on the SPSS web site?

In case I can propose the changes here, here’s what I’d like to see:

In SPSS graphics I would like to have better control of text on graphs.  In particular in text boxes (at least) I would like the capability of mixing fonts in a text box (mainly to allow boldface, italics, Greek letters, and subscripts and superscripts).   Ideally I would also like the same control over axis labels, although I could get the same results with text boxes.

I would also like programmatic ability to add a text box to any point on a graph.  Now if I want to add a text box I have to do it in the Chart Editor.  This means that I have to manually add the changes again every time I revise a graph.

These changes would give me better ability to produce professional-quality graphs.

Thanks for your help,

Don Macnaughton

There is a link labelled Suggestions on the front page of the SPSS Community site (www.ibm.com/developerworks/spssdevcentral).  That will send email to the appropriate place.

As for adding text boxes automatically, you can save a chart template including only the text boxes from the Chart Editor and then just reference that template in future GGRAPH commands.  Templates let you save a lot of chart items in a reusable way, although not everything can be controlled.

Re: How Do I Suggest SPSS Improvements Very sensible suggestions

The ‘appropriate place’ will probably ignore. SPSS does not seem to have a good simple mechanism for letting user community help prioritise suggestions. So it mihgt be useful to copy to THIS list so that colleagues can support your suggestions

Saving graph templates is indeed very useful – especially as one can choose which features of current graph to save.
BUT, as Jon’s response only SOME features get saved. If there are features you need that don’t get saved. Put in suggestions – I will support

Best

Diana
