How do you calculate weights in SPSS?

Deepa Bhat
Hi everyone,

How do you calculate weights in SPSS?

I'm not referring to how to add weights to the analysis, but how to
calculate weights itself. I'm not referring to Data- Weight cases.

If you could refer to the help topic that would provide instructions,
that would be a good start. I looked, but the topics did not seems to
answer this question.

Right now my colleagues are calculating weights in SAS and then
entering them in SPSS and then running the analysis using the weights.

Thanks so much,
Deepa

Do you have a complex sample and you wish to weight cases accordingly?

Are you trying to create a composite scale (index) and are looking to
weight variables?

Are you trying to create a measure of workload by weighting judicial cases?

Please explain in more detail what you are trying to accomplish.

Re: How do you calculate weights in SPSS?

We are doing a national survey in South Africa in 159 HOSPITALS on
injection safety.
We would like to weight the data by the number of beds in each
hospital. This is the information that I have now.

Deepa

Re: How do you calculate weights in SPSS?

Hector Maletta
You would apply the survey to a sample of cases (patients, I presume, or
whatever) from each hospital, with different sampling rations, i.e. the
sampling ratio for the ith hospital is ni/Ni (where n is the sample and N
the total number of beds in that hospital). If you have only one
questionnaire per hospital, the ratio is 1/Ni. The weights would be the
reciprocal of these ratios, i.e. Wi=Ni/ni. For one questionnaire per
hospital you'll have simply Wi=Ni.
Each case in the sample should have the value of the corresponding weight as
a variable. Suppose the variable is called BEDWEIGHT.
Once the variable is already in the data file, you simple choose that
variable for weighting. From the drop menu, go to Data-Weight cases and
choose weighting cases by BEDWEIGHT, or by syntax, issue the command WEIGHT
BY BEDWEIGHT.
Hope this helps.

Hector
