Re: How to use R in PASW?

Peck, Jon

If you want to use an R package that has already been wrapped with an SPSS/PASW dialog box and syntax, just download and install it from SPSS Developer Central (www.spss.com/devcentral).  Set the filter in the Downloads section to R to see what is already available.  It will require that you install the appropriate version of R and the R plugin.  Most of the already wrapped commands also require the Python plugin.  The plugins can be found on the Developer Central Plugins page.

If you want to run R code directly, install R and the R plugin and write the code between BEGIN PROGRAM R. and END PROGRAM. statements.  Details are in the documentation installed with the plugin.

HTH,

Jon Peck

Thank you for your immediate reply, Jon.
I am using version SPSS 16. However, when I look at the R at the www.spss.com/devcentral, SPSS 17 was indicated.  Where can I download the R and R plug-in for SPSS 16?

Re: How to use R in PASW?

Peck, Jon

The plugin for v16 is also on the Plugins page.  It's the sixth item.  The extension commands, however, all require v17.

With v16, you will need R 2.5.

In the download section in the www.spss.com/devcentral where R was being filtered, the following are displayed in the first page:
Mosaic and Association Plots
R-Based Regression Diagnostic Plots
Rboxplot - Creating an R Program from a Dialog
SPSSINC APRIORI
SPSSINC BREUSCH PAGAN
SPSSINC HETCOR
and so on...

Shall I download all these?

Re: How to use R in PASW?

Peck, Jon
In reply to this post by E. Bernardo

Look at the minimum version requirement.  The SPSSINC ones all require v17, so you should ignore them for v16.  The first three listed are dialog box based and so also won't work with 16, but the dialog box code could probably be adapted to work with 16 or used as a model.

The main point, though, is that you should only download these (version issues aside) if you want to use those particular features.  Once you have installed R and the R plugin, you have full access to R by writing R code within SPSS/PASW.

Regards,

Jon
