Import SAS Files to SPSS 15.0 with value labels

Hans-Christian Stahl
Dear list members,

Has anyone successfully imported SAS Files in SPSS including value labels?

When getting SAS DATA FILES (.sas7bdat) in SPSS without the formats
subcommand - no value labels appear. This is well known and also described
in the archive of our list. Unfortunately I could neither find in the list's
archive nor in the SPSS Help Menu a way how to import the SAS formats files,
so that value labels are attributed. It never worked.

The SPSS Help Menu states: "For SAS transport files, the FORMATS subcommand
is ignored". Is the SAS file I am using (.sas7bdat) a SAS transport file?

Many thanks for your help.

Answers can be sent directly to my Email address.

Did you actually use the FORMATS subcommand naming the file containing the
labels. File Open box describes a file with extension of .sas7bdat as a SAS
Long File Name file. A Transport file is associated with a different
extension.

Dear Hans-Christian,

try following statement in sas to create the value labels (where 'path' is the directory that contains your input data file):

libname mylib 'path';
proc format library = mylib
cntlout = mylib.sas_fmts;
run;

then:
GET SAS /DATA='path\inputdatafile.sas7bdat'
 /FORMATS='sas_fmts.sas7bdat'.

Regards, karin
