I apologize in case such a question was already answered, but I would need a
solution to increase the definition of the graphs I produce using the IGRAPH procedure. Is that something I control from the SPSS Graph Interactive Object menu? I have been searching but I can't find any setting that allows to manipulate definition. I use SPSS 15 and I then export the graphs into PowerPoint where don't look as nice as if I had created them with e.g. Excel... I think that you may have encountered a 'non-SPSS' problem in that it depends on how you get the chart from SPSS to PowerPoint and what the different programmes do with it. In 15 you have the option to either use 'Export' from the 'File' menu and export the graph directly in PowerPoint, this normally gives good resolution. The alternative is to copy the chart to the clipboard and then either use 'Paste' or 'Paste Special'; if you use the latter then you have a number of different options. I suggest you experiment with all the options to see which suits you best. I have found that copying, paste special and then using 'Device independent bitmap' works best for me. Hope this helps !! Thanks John, I will try to experiment the way you suggest but I already see
a couple of issues here: (1) I think the quality of the graphs *within* the SPSS output is already not so good as I would like to see it - that is the "raw material" I am using to export is not so good (2) I have several dozens graphs I repeat on a monthly basis so I would need to develop some automated procedure to export them automatically I wish to avoid having to export the data into an excel spreadsheet and from there produce graphs... Generally the SPSS export to PowerPoint preserves all the available resolution (internally it uses TIF), but PowerPoint does its own magic on all the imported charts. You can try other export formats and see whether any of them gives you a better result. If you find one that works better, that export process can be automated.
You will probably get better results with the Viz engine charts (ggraph et al) than with Igraph, so you might see if you like those better. Note, in SPSS 16, Igraph charts are actually produced by the Viz engine (while still using Igraph syntax), so they have the same look and editing options as the other charts. IGRAPH in release 15 or lower is an enhanced metafile which many destination
applications don't quite know what to do with. IMHO, IGRAPH graphs in these releases are not nearly as nice looking as graphs produced by the GRAPH command starting with release 11 or so and GGRAPH starting with release 14. Text rendering tends to be the major culprit. The same technology which renders GRAPH and GGRAPH graphs is now used for IGRAPH in release 16 so the appearance is significantly improved. Whether you will be able to get the exact graph you want with IGRAPH 16 is an open question. What are doing that requires you use IGRAPH? -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Luca Meyer Sent: Tuesday, October 09, 2007 1:25 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: R: Increasing resolution of graphs Thanks John, I will try to experiment the way you suggest but I already see a couple of issues here: (1) I think the quality of the graphs *within* the SPSS output is already not so good as I would like to see it - that is the "raw material" I am using to export is not so good (2) I have several dozens graphs I repeat on a monthly basis so I would need to develop some automated procedure to export them automatically I wish to avoid having to export the data into an excel spreadsheet and from there produce graphs...
