Legends for paneled line graphs

Margaret MacDougall
Hello

I have been using the SPSS Chart Builder to generate paneled line graphs in SPSS.  Can anyone advise on the possibility of replacing the single giant legend on the outside of the entire chart by:

a) one legend per panel with the legend included inside each corresponding panel;

or

b) a label tagging each line for each panel?

I should add that each panel has distinct legend categories, which is why having one panel per legend (as described under a)) could make sense.

I am using paneling to avoid too much repetition of the x-axis and y-axis variables, as the categories for these variables are the same for each line graph; otherwise, I would simply generate a separate line graph per panel and dispense with the paneling.

Many thanks in advance

Best wishes

Margaret

I don't think a is possible, but b sounds doable. See this blogpost for examples of placing labels on the ends of lines, https://andrewpwheeler.wordpress.com/2015/01/14/labeling-tricks-in-spss-plots/. If you provide an example dataset I can see if I can show an example with your data.

Thanks for your kind reply, Andy.  After emailing you, a few work-around approaches sprung to mind using copy-paste techniques. However, I look forward to reading the webpage you have directed me to gain further inspiration!  There is room for great improvement in the way SPSS manages legends. The figure legends available via drop-down menus are very inflexible and often difficult to read.

Best wishes
Margaret
