Loose data or variable views when opening existing file

Hi all
Normally SPSS files open with 2 tabs in bottom left corner - Data & Variable view.
Sometimes/not always when I open an existing file these are not shown.

I have the option of using the menu-view-data or variables, but I prefer the tags at the bottom.

What causes this ?
How can I prevent it ?
