I have forgotten how to download the manuals I want. I downloaded the
Advanced Statistics, the Regression, and the Forecasting manuals from the University of Sussex site but none of them have the syntax. It is all dialogue boxes. Where can I get these manuals that give the syntax like the Command Reference manual does? I have spss ver 21 and these three modules came with it at the same time I bought ver 21. I don't know if the version 21 manuals are still available, but here's a link to 22: The command syntax for all commands is contained in the Command Syntax Reference: ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/software/analytics/spss/documentation/statistics/22.0/en/client/Manuals/IBM_SPSS_Statistics_Command_Syntax_Reference.pdf Note that most, if not all, this information is also available in the help system installed with the product. Thanks, Rick. I see the IBM source also does not have the syntax. It has
a menu path in place of an actual dialogue box. The U of Sussex's dialogue box is better than a menu path but it would be nice if these manuals had actual commands associated with all the things that these modules can do that cost extra money. In fact, they should have had the syntax. SAS does, or at least their manuals did as of 16 years ago (how time flies). As an aside, I had to replace the hard drive in my lap top and had to call IBM for an authorization code. I couldn't find it. I eventually did, but I got the impression that IBM is not very customer friendly. I got the impression that if one does not have a service contract, they do not want to talk to you. In this situation if I had not eventually found the authorization code I might have had some problems working with IBM to get the issue resolved. Is this a mistaken impression on my part? The person I was talking to went off line (the phone) and after some time he came back and said he was not authorized to help me and gave me no direction on who to talk to in IBM. This is not very user friendly. Not sure about downloads, but the best book I ever used for teaching was: Marija Norusis The SPSS Guide to Data Analysis (various editions, 1987 - 1991) I used to buy them in bulk from SPSS Inc (UK) and resell them at cost (about £10) to my students. These books are still among the best for using SPSS syntax and for following the natural progression and logic of processing and analysing data from questionnaire surveys. Second-hand copies are like gold-dust. Check eBay and Amazon for rare second-hand copies. Her SPSS Statistics Guides are totally different and use mainly the drop-down menus. Jacqueline Collier Using SPSS Syntax: A Beginner's Guide (Sage 2010) . . . is really a handbook for people already familiar with the drop-down menus, but attempting to wean them over to syntax, which is often far easier and quicker to use and has more facilities than those available via the menus. It's the only one to deal with dates. Thank you John and everyone else who responded. As Rick Oliver
indicated, the syntax is in the Command Syntax Reference manual. I had expected syntax to be in the Regression, Advanced Statistics, and Forecasting Reference manuals and when they weren't that threw me for a loop. However, I see upon closer reading of the Forecasting Reference manual, for example, that it does give the basic commands with some information about the syntax and a reference to go to the Command Syntax Reference manual. Also, if worse comes to worse (which I don't think will happen) I can run a sample program from a drop down menu to get the syntax to know where to look in the Command Syntax Reference manual. I sort of made a mountain out of a mole hill. Sorry. I still have ver 15 and since it is so old and the reference manuals were written by SPSS Inc it occurred to me that maybe their manuals (for Complex Samples, Regression, and Advanced Models) might be in syntax instead of drop down menus. To my surprise, they also are in drop down menus. As an aside, I learned ARIMA modeling using the Pack System on an IBM mainframe. There were no drop down menus and not even any syntax. One had to enter numerical values for each line of a model run. This may seem difficult, but it is not when you get used to it. It was a very versatile and powerful (at least when it was written by Pack) program. For example, if the 2nd order term in a 3rd order moving average model was not significant it could be excluded from the final model. SPSS never had that versatility with its ARIMA procedure and was not as powerful. Has SPSS improved their ARIMA procedure since ver 21 of the Base? I suspect not. Hi,
Alibris lists some goodies here beginning at 0.97 € & postage for a SPSS-PC Plus edition. You might also buy the brand new edition for only 39.95 € : https://www.alibris.co.uk/booksearch?keyword=The+SPSS+Guide+to+Data+Analysis+&mtype=B&hs.x=0&hs.y=0 I used a private copy of a red colored Norusis manual for years as it was well constructed and her examples were telling. Today the modules are far more advanced, and I don't know if /STAT 1,2 3 still works.
