What version was it that SPSS dropped the capability
of doing maps?
Are there plans to reinstate such capabilities? What have users done to get basic maps like SPSS used to do? e.g., choropleth (aka patch), point (aka incidence), and gradient (aka contour). Has anyone done cartograms using SPSS data for the area adjustment? Has any one tried reading SPSS files into ArcView? How did it go? I didn't even know this was possible in Spss. Must be because we're using an old version. You could use R within Spss to make graphs. I did it once, and I don't recall all the details. I plotted some dep. var by postal code. Useful for inspecting one's data. IIRC, the library was called maptools. See Fig 9 of http://r-spatial.sourceforge.net/ . You do need your own .shp file though (but I believe that, for the US, these can be downloaded for free at various places, e.g. CDC).

All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: Art Kendall <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Sent: Sat, April 2, 2011 2:09:31 PM Subject: [SPSSX-L] Mapping in SPSS What version was it that SPSS dropped the capability of doing maps? I believe the Maps module lasted from Version 10 to Version 14 or 15. Almost certainly it was not in Ver. 16. Because the map files had to be in a MapInfo format and there was limited availability of map files and the options for manipulating map attributes in the SPSS output window were pretty limited (as I recall), I eventually bit the bullet and bought ArcView 9.1. Arcview can read MS Access database tables so I export SPSS data into Access and go from there.
