Matrix optimisation style syntax help

San K
Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with an algorithm (in spss) used
for matching participants to controls.

I have about 4000 participants and 700,000 potential controls.

Just to make it simple, say that we have a participant, potential
control and Squared differences as:

DATA LIST FREE / Participant (A10) pControl (A10) SSD.
BEGIN DATA
P1 C1 0.7
P1 C2 0.4
P1 C3 0.99
P1 C4 0.29
P2 C1 0.56
P2 C2 0.39
P2 C3 0.2
P2 C4 0.32
P3 C2 0.37
P3 C4 0.27
P3 C6 0.11
P3 C7 0.03
P4 C1 0.04
P4 C2 0.04
P4 C4 0.05
P4 C6 0.89
END DATA.

Now, I need to find a good NON repeated control for each participant
where the total of SSD is minimised. Key points here are ‘non
repeated’ and ‘minimised total SSD’.

Currently I'm simply sorting by SSD. Then picking from the top and
making sure I don't pick the same control again. This process doesn't
necessarily minimise the total sum of squared differences.

I’m reasonably comfortable LOOPS, DO REAPEATS and macros.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
San

Re: Matrix optimisation style syntax help

Peck, Jon
Why not use the FUZZY case-control matching extension command available from SPSS Developer Central (www.spss.com/devcentral)?  It doesn't minimize an overall function - that's a very hard problem, but you can specify a tolerance for matches on any number of variables.

Jon Peck

PASW Statistics Certification

Peck, Jon
SPSS is starting a certification program for PASW Statistics...

In response to extensive user feedback, SPSS is pleased to introduce its first software certification program: the PASW Statistics (Level I) Exam. Earning your certification in PASW Statistics will give you an edge that will distinguish you from your peers. And, because SPSS Inc.'s Predictive Analytics solutions are recognized globally, you can be sure that the PASW Statistics credential will carry the same significance wherever your career takes you.

The program is now in beta test.  The test fee is being waived if you register and complete the Level I exam as a beta participant (dare I say test beta tester?) by September 15.

Go to
http://www.spss.com/certification/

to read about the details and to sign up for the test.  You can schedule the test online, by phone, or through a nearby test center.

Jon Peck

Re: Matrix optimisation style syntax help

Maguin, Eugene
In reply to this post by San K
San,

On one hand it seems like a solution to your question is pretty simple given
a couple of assumptions. 1) Participants and controls can be separated into
two datasets. 2) SSD is a property of controls only. Given this, sort the
controls file by SSD (I assume that any duplicates have already been removed
from the controls file.), select the first 4000 controls and match those
back to the participants without using the BY subcommand.

On the other hand, I'll bet this scheme isn't correct. Could that be true?
If so, what's missing in the explanation of the problem?

Gene Maguin

>>I'm wondering if anyone can help me with an algorithm (in spss) used

I have about 4000 participants and 700,000 potential controls.

P2 C3 0.2
P2 C4 0.32
P3 C2 0.37
P3 C4 0.27
P3 C6 0.11
P3 C7 0.03
P4 C1 0.04
P4 C2 0.04
P4 C4 0.05
P4 C6 0.89
END DATA.

Now, I need to find a good NON repeated control for each participant

Currently I'm simply sorting by SSD. Then picking from the top and

I have just done it as it is multiple choice on screen type of assessment.
It is free at the moment for the beta testers and Costs $250 in Australia.
It appears that it will be handled by authorized test centers on the same
lines as Microsoft or cisco certification programs.

You failed either way.
I asked a legitimate question. I was asking what the questions were. I just want to know what exactly is being certified. After all, SPSS does not equal statistics.

Subject: PASW Statistics Certification

Regards,
Jon Peck

Jon raises a good point:  The ability to get SPSS (or PAWS) to produce output does not require vast amounts of statistical expertise.  (Ask anyone who has taught an undergrad stats course using SPSS, or consulted with researchers.)  It must to some degree certify one's ability to do the former--it is being put on by SPSS, after all.  But how much does it test statistical knowledge?

Today I've taken the exam at a testing center. Unfortunately I'm not allowed
to tell anybody about the contents. So, I do not know if a discussion on the
spssx-list is possible.

The best way to know what is on the exam is to take it.  I did.  However, I won't know my score for some time.  Kind of a drag. I am sure that few people on this list will have any problems with doing well on the test.

Re: PASW Statistics Certification

Kylie
Hi all,

The link that Jon (Peck) gave gives some idea of the content
(http://www.spss.com/certification/ - see bottom left).

It suggests that the exam covers topics from the three listed courses,
Introduction to SPSS, Introduction to Statistical Analysis, and Data Management
and Manipulation. If you follow the link to the Course Descriptions
(http://www.spss.com/training/descriptions.cfm) you can find detailed tables of
contents for each of these.

Steve - when I went through the enrollment process it got me to nominate a local
testing centre where I would physically sit the exam.

Cheers,
Kylie.

Roberts, Michael
I went through the registration process, and depending upon where you are, the testing facility may be close or quite distant.  In my case, the three closest ones listed did not offer the testing.

I did the same and had 5 centres ranging from 45 to 130 miles away - none of which offered the certification - but then I am in the north-east of Scotland !! L

I went through the registration process, and depending upon where you are, the testing facility may be close or quite distant.  In my case, the three closest ones listed did not offer the testing.
