Max number of cases & variables in SPSS 19

Gerónimo Maldonado

Hi All:

In our institution we have a database with over 95k records (including initial & follow-up records), in order to manage this database we are using SPSS 14. The problem arises when we move data from SPSS 12 to 14 and inversely, some of the variables and cases went cut-off or missing and we have to check and recheck data for integrity. The question is: How SPSS 19 behaves when importing data from previous SPSS versions?; Is there a constrain in database size, specifically in the max limit of variables of cases SPSS 19 tolerate

Thanks in advance.

1.  There should be no difference in variable handling with V14 compared to V12.  No data should have been cut off.

2.  But in any case, V19 should have no problem with older datasets.

3.  If you enable Unicode mode, available as of V16, non-Unicode data will be converted automatically.  This results in an automatic increase in the size of string variables (but the maximum of 32767 bytes remains) in order to accommodate the extra space required for accented characters and other characters that are not 7-bit ascii.  Unicode has important advantages if your text has extended characters, but it's use is optional.

You can turn on Unicode mode with SET UNICODE ON or in Edit>Options.  If you do this, be sure that your SPSS locale setting is correct so that it will know what the character codes actually mean.  If your text does not actually need all the extra space because it has only a few or no extended characters, the ALTER TYPE command can reclaim the extra space.
