Hey folks!
Like many users on this board I continue to use an older version of SPSS cause quite frankly it seems like its the only version I can even remotely get to run most of the time - specifically I'm running V14 (all relevant updates). Even this crashes fairly regularly invoking python. But, with another new year comes another attempt to get things running in the latest version - now V17 (all relevant updates) (SINCE IM PAYING $1000s OVER THE YEARS FOR THIS #$#^$%$ THING and have THREE VERSIONS I HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN ABLE TO USE) - and yet more failures. The machine is running Vista Ultimate 32bit - single core dual processor - 4gig RAM. Its got office 2007, AVG and really not much else on it or running. I cant even get my simple syntax files to run - half a dozen or more attempts are required IF I can even get this thing to run from start to finish - which it runs in V14 no problem (no errors or warnings). This file is nothing more than recodes/ computes/ var/val labelling/ freqs/ desc/ if statements, save and gets etc - nothing spectacular ... I have managed to 'successfully' run the aforementioned syntax ONCE and after about a dozen or more attempts ... and even during that run it produced numerous warnings that 'another process' was running and this that or the other thing and I might lose data ... it hangs on recodes, it hangs on if statements, it hangs on var/val labelling, yadda yadda yadda ... We worked with Tim individually on this issue, but did want to let others know the resolution. The problem is that a large number of log lines are being created during the process and the system is running out of resources in attempting to cache them to the core. This has been fixed for Release 17.0.2, planned for release in March.

Ooops - that got cut off - sloppy fingers
Was trying to offer my appreciation for the efforts of SPSS support - they contacted me directly and worked with me to indentify and solve my problem. Took a while to get them to see the issue but that was largely on my end. SO THANKS - I very much appreciate that effort! That said - I also want to re-emphasize my concern about the releases of various versions. Im still in a position of having rarely if ever used v15, v16 or v17 due to various problems that each shipped with. Im not sure what the solution is - but at some point I want to be able to use the software I buying. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of SPSS Support Sent: February 6, 2009 12:14 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: More version issues We worked with Tim individually on this issue, but did want to let others know the resolution. While on the subject, is there an article or blog entry or some such
that outlines SPSS development model. For example, 'we release a new version every year and support it with maintence patches for two years.' Or a past thread where these issues have been discussed? Also, does anyone know of any other piece of software in the $1500 dollar range that releases new versions every year? Autocad, for example, seems to take a more careful approach to updates and introducing new features. Stata is two years. Matlab is slower still. SAS has been on 9 for a while. The adobe suite just went to 4, but three was around for a while. Best, RV SPSS Support wrote: > We worked with Tim individually on this issue, but did want to let others know the resolution. Hi Listers,
I come asking for syntax...again. I've got a list of strings: 180798 181734 181893 182147 and i need to add a hyphen after the 3rd number/character so it needs to look like: 180-798 181-734 181-893 182-147 I know someone posted this code at one time... but of course, i didn't pay attention to it since i didn't need it at the time. if someone has this handy, i would really appreciate it. Thanks a bunch. Carol ===================== To manage your subscription to SPSSX-L, send a message to [hidden email] (not to SPSSX-L), with no body text except the command. Break the string up into two strings with substring.
