Multi-level models workshops or seminars using SPSS?

Anton-24
Dear Listers-

Is anyone aware of any workshops or seminars on multi-level (HLM) modeling
that use SPSS as the primary software package?

Thanks,

Anton

I'm not aware of any seminars or workshops.  But if you would settle for a good introductory book that gives good examples of SPSS syntax, try "Applied Multilevel Analysis" by Jos Twisk.  I found it extremely helpful in getting to grips with some of the basics, and after studying it, I was much better able to understand some of the other better known books on multilevel models (e.g., Snijders & Bosker).

Bruce

p.s. - I don't have the site handy just now, but I know that you can download the data Twisk used for his examples.

Multi-level models workshops or seminars using SPSS?

Christopher Stride
Hi Anton
I run twice-yearly courses on Multi-level modelling using SPSS, here in
Sheffield, UK; courses are also available on an in-house basis
Full details here:

Here is an article that discuses how to use the mixed-model procedure in
SPSS to conduct multilevel analyses on cross-sectional, as well as
longitudinal data.

Peugh, J. L. & Enders, C. K. (2005). Using the SPSS Mixed Procedure to
Fit Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Multilevel Models.  Educational and
Psychological Measurement, 65(5), 717-741.

Non-linear survival anlysis

Kornbrot, Diana
Non-linear survival anlysis Help

I need to do NON_LINEAR cox regression, i.e. would like to know if the hazard function for death is  quadratic as well as a linear function of the covariate (quantity of  a biomarker)

There is no obvious way to do this using menus and spss didn’t like ne inserting a quadratic term in the syntax editor
Obviously I can create variable that are x^2, x^3 etc of my predicotr covariate x – but there must be a better way, as for the usual logistic or regression function

Best

Re: Non-linear survival anlysis

SR Millis-3
Have considered using restricted cubic splines?  Frank Harrell discusses this method in his book, Regression Modeling Strategies.

It can be easily implemented in R, which is free.
