I am having trouble creating some multiple response variables from my data
set and wonder if anyone can help me. I have several pieces of data which are formatted as "check all that apply" in the response. So each category within the question is yes = checked or no= not checked. I have tried to set these up as multiple response variables using both methods available - under the "DATA" menu and under the "Analyze" menu - however, neither one is working. It just doesn't do anything. I have tried changing the type of data (ordinal, nomical, scale), the type of response (dichotomous, category), etc. and nothing seems to work. I am using SPSS 15. Multiple response variables are used in SPSS procedures CTABLES (via the
Custom Tables dialog), Tables (via the 4 Tables dialogs on the Analyze>Tables command), and Chart Builder. If you go back to the Multiple Response Sets dialog box do you see the ones you have defined? If so, open one of these dialogs and see if they appear. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Jan Veenstra Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 12:16 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Multi-response variables I am having trouble creating some multiple response variables from my data set and wonder if anyone can help me. Jan,
I assume you created a dichotomous variable - checked or not checked -- for each response category of the question of interest. In the Data menu select Define Multiple Response sets. Transfer all dichotomous variables for the question set in the Variables in Set box. Since your variables are coded as dichotomies, indicate which value you want to have counted. Enter a unique name for each multiple response set. The name can be up to 63 bytes long. A dollar sign is automatically added to the beginning of the set name. Enter a descriptive label for the set. (This is optional.) Click Add to add the multiple response set to the list of defined sets. (Source: SPSS Help ) Now, to use the set variable. Go to Analyze> Tables> Multiple Response Tables and/or Custom Tables (There maybe a few other procedures where you can use your set variable) Also if your interest is just counting the presence or absence of something you may want to check the COUNT command. Hope this helps. Florio At 02:16 PM 8/29/2007, Jan Veenstra wrote: >I am having trouble creating some multiple response variables from my data >set and wonder if anyone can help me.
