Multilevel Mediation

Oliver
This post was updated on .
Hi everyone,

I have used the Bauer (2006) syntax in order to run a multilevel mediation (lower level: 1-1-1) with my data and everything seems to work great. However, I was wondering if there's any syntax/code available in order to add a Level 1 covariate ?

Thanks in advance,
O.

I suspect that many list members will not bother taking the time to do a Google search to figure out what Bauer (2006) is all about.  TRANSLATION:  You'll be far more likely to get some help if provide some links!

Also, have you tried asking Bauer?

Couldn't have said it better myself Bruce.
I might add:
I for one am not going to bother to Google Bauer (2006).
If a link is provided I  might bother to click it.
If it isn't a free article then I won't bother any further.
If it is free I might bother to read it.
If it is interesting I may muck with the code.
If it is ugly and complicated, I do have paypal!

There appears to be an explanation of how to apply Bauer's method (excluding covariates) on the UCLA website:

I don't have time to figure out how to incorporate a first level covariate at this time, although on the face of it, it does not appear that difficult.

I would suggest you contact Bauer directly, and if possible share the syntax with SPSS-L when you learn it. Interesting question.

Good luck!

Re: Multilevel Mediation

Maguin, Eugene

I often forget about the level of resources from IDRE at UCLA. Thanks.

Oliver,

So, where is this covariate supposed to go in the mediation sequence? Is it

a)      X + C1 -> M; M -> Y

b)      X -> M; M +C1 -> Y

c)       X + C1 -> M; M + C1 -> Y

Re: Multilevel Mediation

Oliver

Hi guys,

As suggested by Ryan, I did contact Bauer directly and he provided me with the answer on how to model a Level-1 covariate in a 1-1-1 multilevel mediation model. Just as a reminder, the step-by-step procedure in order to conduct a multilevel mediation analysis in SPSS is described here: dbauer.web.unc.edu/files/2014/08/SPSSinstructions.pdf

Now, in order to add a Level-1 covariate, here's the response from Bauer (see below), which is directly related to the step-by-step procedure posted above:
Hi,
Sure, you can add a level 1 covariate. You would just use the
indicator variables to toggle which equations it enters. So let's
say it's called X2, then you'd have Sm*X2 and Sy*X2. I'd
probably not include random slopes for the covariate, however,
as these models have a lot of random effects already and may
not tolerate more.
Best,
Dan
