I have recently started to receive over and over again the error message Warning # 4477. Command name: VALUE LABELS >Undefined error #4477 - Cannot open text file "C:\PROGRA~1\IBM\SPSS\STATIS~1\20\lang\en\spss.err": No such file or directory It does not always have the same error number. Today the same message occurred but with error numbers 4477 4480 67 701 4816 4810 703 485 4050 4070 4461 and it occurred in a variety of contexts such as COMPUTE, MISSING VALUES, VAR LABELS, DO IF END IF The message always ends with the warning “This command not executed”. How do I get around the problem that this creates? I’ve looked in the relevant directory and it contains plenty of files but NOT spss.err. Can that file be downloaded separately? With thanks and best wishes Laurie 8th April 2013 I’m using SPSS 20, running under Windows 7, and with 16Gb of RAM. To: [hidden email] |

Options:
1. Reinstall SPSS? 2. Locate another copy of this file and copy it to the relevant folder. 3. ? On ver 21: I located SPSS.err in the location you posted, so it must have been clobbered on your system.
Please reply to the list and not to my personal email.

That is not a good sign. Something
about your Statistics installation is corrupted, so there might be other
damage as well. spss.err is not available separately, but you might
try Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Select IBM SPSS Statistics
20 and choose Repair.
