Not SPSS: 5-point versus 6-point scales

I’m trying to create an attitude scale. When it comes to item scales, e.g., 5-point versus 6-point what do I need to consider? Is there a reference where this is discussed? I can see that increasing the item scale will yield more item variance, but I would think that I would need more participants then?  Does removing the neutral choice influence the response pattern on items (e.g., skewness)? A reference I could sit back with would be ideal.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at this page for two approaches you might consider in determining the number of response options:


As you can seen, these are extensions of standard binary logistic regression. No time to elaborate.
