OMS and GPL

Brock-15
Hi all,

I have a few questions.  Basically, I think we are only using a fraction
of what SPSS can do, and after looking into these advanced features in
the manual, I am pretty sure of it.  But first, I need a better grasp of
what they are and how to use them.

1)       Can you provide some examples of how you use the OMS feature?
Right now, we create our syntax, and usually bring the output into excel
or powerpoint manually.  We never use the graphs.  Basically, how
powerful is OMS and what could I be using it for?

2)       I know in the last few versions SPSS released the GPL language
for charts.  To be honest, I don't really know what that means.  But
after browsing the forums yesterday, my interest is peaked.  Can we
really create any kind of graph we want and control every single
feature?  (I saw an example of the Minard march on the website and my
mind was blown)  In the manual, it discusses the fact that we can use a
csv file as a source.  Does this mean we don't need an spss dataset
open?  Do we simply run the GPL from syntax or is there some place else?
I can see that we generate some basic GPL from syntax, but I feel like
we can edit a lot more than I realize.

3)       I saw on the SPSS website Vizulation services.  What is this?
It shows examples of some great charts, and the ability to save the
"template" as a GPL or XML.  After some browsing, I figured out that the
VizML is a XML structure to create a chart.  Where do we process this
xml to generate a chart?  I saw that in the chart editor we can save the
template as xml, but I don't quite get where we use this xml.  And the
same goes for the GPL we can get off of the site.  Where do we run this?
Out of syntax?

Obviously I am not a tech guy, per se.  Typically once I can get my head
around these things I can start to run with it.  I get that GPL appears
to be a new language to control charts, and I read that is exteremely
powerful, I just need to know more and how to get started.  Truthfully,
the manuals didn't help as much as I would have hoped.

Anyway, I know I am asking a lot, but if you can point me in the right
direction, it will be much appreciated.
