Good morning, from NYC, Please forgive me, if this question seems naive: What does the OMS procedure in Utilities do?
I’ve just got a request to interpret a syntax file that begins with an OMS command. I’ve got the OMS chapter from the user’s guide, but, I’m still not clear what OMS does. Any help will be appreciated. TIA. Stephen Salbod, Pace University, NYC |

OMS allows you to direct output that would ordinarily appear in the output viewer to a file of some sort (e.g., to a data file, or text file, etc). IIRC, Raynald's book has a chapter on OMS. Unfortunately, the links to download it on Ray's site no longer work, and you end up on that infernal IBM site.

You definitely hit the nail on the head--Raynald's book! I knew I've seen "OMS" before. I'm going to check it out immediately. 1) The Data Management book is readily
available on the SPSS Community site, which is not at all infernal. Just
go to
www.ibm.com/developerworks/spssdevcentral and look in the Books and Articles section. That isn't difficult. 2) There is a lot of material in the Help system about OMS - both in the Syntax Reference and in the help for the OMS Control Panel. Jon, is there any way to get that site to appear more prominently in Google search results? When I search on <raynald levesque spss programming>, I don't see it in the first 50 results. Cheers, Bruce

Well for starters, Ray has not been involved
with the book for years and years, so searching for
SPSS Programming and Data Management might work a little better. The developerWorks team promised us that unlike the old DevCentral site, items on the SPSS Community site would appear in Google searches. I see some of the forum and blog content from that site appearing in Google searches but not the books and articles material. I will investigate with the dW team to see if we can figure this out. Hi Jon, Thanks for pointing me to devcentral . It just wasn’t in my solution space. The Syntax Reference didn’t make that much sense to me when I first checked it out--I needed context. Now, with a little help from my friends
