Henry Rzepa just sent this out to the Research Data Management list ([hidden email]) under the subject: Painful story; does anyone have similar stories to tell? It’s brilliant and apposite: enjoy! Yikes!! Had a position as a data manager in a University lab.
My predecessor had the brilliant idea to reformat the machine I was going to be using without building a backup of the project files I was going to be working on. I had to reassemble the relevant data from partial archives and then manually go through all of the raw data to verify that I had a complete file with all participants. Not only that but after I reinstalled windows I picked up a nasty virus almost immediately due to serious stuff beaming around the university network. It then took 2 days to get IT to come up and fix my box. What a pain in the ass that whole week proved to be. ---
