Odd behaviour when importing from Excel

David Millar

Hi All

I am reading in data from an .xlsx spreadsheet that contains student id information (name, gender etc.) and responses to each of 80 multiple choice items (A, B, C, D, “”).  For one case, the last on the sheet, the student has no responses for the multiple choice items.  However, when read into SPSS the student’s name appears in each of the 80 items.  This is especially odd as the name is not the last variable with a non-missing value to the left of the 80 items.  I had written syntax to automate the process but the same result occurs when I use the dropdown menu.  Reading in hundreds of files and this is the only such case I have spotted.

The dropdown menu syntax output looks like this with no indication of any errors

GET DATA /TYPE=XLSX

  /FILE='[pathname] \Results.xlsx'

  /SHEET=name 'TestResults_6369'

  /CELLRANGE=full

  /READNAMES=on

  /ASSUMEDSTRWIDTH=32767.

EXECUTE.

I am using Version 22 (Release 22.0.0.1 64-bit edition).

Apologies if this has been dealt with before.  If anyone knows what the issue might be or can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

David
