Overlaying line plots in SPSS

c.wright@uq.edu.au

To whom it may concern,

I wish to overlay data from two different variables on the one graph. I have seen a post capable of doing this for histograms but not for line graphs/density plots. I wish to be able to show two line graphs (similar to normal distribution files) as density plots on the same axes in SPSS.

I have attached an example of a paper that has used the figures I am looking at doing. Please see figure 3 in the attached file.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

Create your graph then double click on the graph and add normal dist curve
from the drop down menus. You can select parameters ot your distribution
curve as well as selecting other types of distibutions and shift them
around. Of course it depends on which version of SPSS you are using.

Max.

Hi Casey,

To fix it:
1) update all your Java software....if still error persists after reboot:
2) reinstall SPSS after a clean uninstall and reboot.

With SPSS19 you can add/overlay several prob distribution density functions
over your graph and change their parameters. Very neat.

Max.

|Hi Max,
|
|I tried doing that but am getting the error: class
|com.spss.vis.exception.VisualisationInternalException
|java.lang. NullPointerException.
|
|How do I fix this error?
|
|Furthermore, how can I convert frequencies to densities? i.e.
|% as currently have data for 20000 probes vs 739 and want to
|document the proportion of each.
|
|Thanks.

If you mean to fit normal or chisq etc. distribution to your data then
analyze your data, obtain distribution parameters for each variable, and
then use SPSS distribution functions to find prop of each case as P(case
#n), or Q(case #n). You can fit various types of prob distributions to your
data.
