Patching for SPSS 16.0.1 crashes SPSS

Dear list!
Merry Xmas to you! Unfortunately it does not seem so merry for me just now. I just installed the patch 16.0.1 (from place) after which when I run SPSS, the PC "freezes" and I get the following error message: File C:\Documents and Settings\Staffan Lindberg ANASTATGLBT!"H\Lokala Inställningar Error detected in FiOpen Error 1216 A file cannot be opened. Probable causes are an attempt to open a read-only file for output, a directory which is too full, an invalid file specification, the specification of a non-existent disk etc. This is an error from which SPSS cannot recover The SPSS run vill terminate now I have SPSS installed on the C-drive and have my working files on the F-drive. Previosly I have run SPSS 16.0 without any glitches (although very sluggish in updating the data editor and output window) I have lots of room both on the C:\drive and the F:\drive. A Xmas without SPSS would be a terrible thing to contemplate. Staffan, have you repoeted this issue to Tech Support? They are in the best position to diagnose such an issue.

Hi Staffan,
Try to change SPSS temp directory to something like "C:\Windows\Temp". I had a similar problem here and changing the temporary directory solved it. Note that you can access Edit... Options from the open output windows (where you got yor error message) and the next time you open SPSS, it should be work fine. Thanks! Nice idea but unfortunately the screen freezes as soon the error messages are displayed so I can't access either the syntax or output window. I have to close SPSS via the Task Manager. I have a rather lengthy email correspondence with the Swedish support but so far nothing useful has come out of it. Hi Staffan,
I just replicated your error by changing my temp directory to something using ç or ã or any letter having an accent mark. I got the exact same error message and behaviour. The only difference seems to be that I can change the temp directory but you can't (I got an Output Window that is not frozen). Hope this information can be useful. Thanks! It semms like you have pinpointed the error. I,m still baffled though, I have 2 Temp directories, one under the C root and one under C:\Windows. Neither contains any diacritical/local letters. They are simply spelt "Temp". Anyway maybe this will help support to the right track. What about "File C:\Documents and Settings\Staffan Lindberg ANASTATGLBT!"H\Lokala Inställningar Error detected in FiOpen"? Is there any other SPSS directory set to this particular path? (or something like that - since it seems that it SPSS messes with the path name on the error message). Anyway, if it is the temp path and you feel brave enough you can change this key in the windows registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\com\spss\/S/P/S/S for /Windows\16.0\en\ui\options\file_locations\tempdir But only do this if you know what you are doing!! Anyway, if it is the temp path and you feel brave enough you can change this key in the windows registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\com\spss\/S/P/S/S for /Windows\16.0\en\ui\options\file_locations\tempdir But only do this if you know what you are doing!! I got the exact same error message and behaviour. The only difference seems to be that I can change the temp directory but you can't (I got an Output Window that is not frozen). I had a similar problem here and changing the temporary directory solved it. Note that you can access Edit... Options from the open output windows (where you got yor error message) and the next time you open SPSS, it should be work fine. Probable causes are an attempt to open a read-only file for output, a directory which is too full, an invalid file specification, the specification of a non-existent disk etc. This is an error from which SPSS cannot recover The SPSS run vill terminate now I have SPSS installed on the C-drive and have my working files on the F-drive. Previosly I have run SPSS 16.0 without any glitches (although very sluggish in updating the data editor and output window) I have lots of room both on the C:\drive and the F:\drive. A Xmas without SPSS would be a terrible thing to contemplate.
