Problem opening files in the current session from Windows browser

Kirill Orlov
I have a problem on my PC with Windows 10.
When I'm running SPSS and I want to open a file (.sav or .sps etc) from
Windows browser into the running session the file is instead opens in a
new SPSS session (instance).

How to correct this? Should I go to Windows registry or to where?

This question comes up a lot, but IIRC, this is the way Statistics has always worked.  It is a multi-instance app so that Production Mode jobs can run in the background without disturbing an interactive session, so double clicking in the Explorer opens a new instance.

Instead, though, you can drag and drop from the Explorer (or another app), and it will open in the Statistics session you drop it on.

If it were always so, I wouldn't ask it. It was not so for me on Windows 7 where I could work with SPSS and open new files directly to THIS session from the browser.

Besides, a Custom Menu item now (on Win 10) launches me - likewise - a new SPSS instance unexpetdedly. I have a Custom menu item named (say) "Open My Favourite syntax", it is linked to the needed .SPS file as an "Application". On Win 7, that menu item opens me that syntax document into the current session where I'm waiting it, nice. On Win 10, it launches me a new SPSS instance which I don't want in any case!

Re: Problem opening files in the current session from Windows browser

Same version of Statistics?  Which is?

I don't know why Win 10 and Win 7 would behave differently on this, but maybe the Windows Explorer protocol has changed.  I don't see any obvious properties that would affect whether a new Statistics session is launched or not.

I found an old post that discusses some changes that MS made in Win 10 about multiple instances, but it mostly focusing on enabling this for UWP apps.

As for the Menu Editor, if you choose application as the type, it seems to follow the Explorer launch protocol, which would produce another copy.  The syntax type opens in the current instance, but it also runs the syntax file.  I'll ask around to see if there is a way for a user to force single instance, but it would probably break Production Mode, if you care about that.

As for the specific example of a favorite syntax file, you might want to take a look at the STATS OPEN PROJECT extension command, which gives you the ability to open and optionally run various SPSS file types at launch or by opening a project via File > Open > Project or corresponding syntax where you have configured what files and setting you want for that project.  I use this all the time to set up my standard, nondefault environment when I launch Statistics.  Projects can  have subprojects, so you could have a master file of macros or other items but customize details in derivative projects.

I believe I asked this previously and some discussion ensued. Check the
archives if there is search ability (shouldn't be too far back in time).

As it were, I did not know you could drag and drop into an open instance of
Statistics. That is a pretty sweet pro tip!

I think this is the previous discussion J.D. is recalling.

From what I have found, the SPSS behavior has not changed, and it should have started a new instance even on Win 7, at least for recent versions.  But I can’t test that myself.
