Hi there,
I was just wondering if anybody is experiencing any problems (bugs?) with SPSS 15? I have been using it for a few weeks now and keep experiencing a situation in which it suddenly won't open files. If I then make a second attempt to open the file, it opens, but as an 'unknown' file - i.e. the name is removed. Furthermore, on two separate occasions I have had two files overwritten with two completely different files! Luckily I had the files backed up elsewhere. Anyone else experiencing things like this? I'm regretting having upgraded to version 15! Hi Charlotte!
using SPSS 15 for quite a long time now - I really don't remember such situation ever happening to me. I guess you have some problem with the installation or your hardware is not working in sync with SPSS 15. Memory could be the crux - if you have memory less than 512MB, you try with some extra memory and check the settings of virtual memory as well. If your machine is highly configured, then you can once try reinstalling the software after removing the old installations completely. using spss 15 is not regrettable if you are used to spss already, rather the current situation with it in your machine. Hope you wd overcome. Best of luck! samir ----- Original Message ----- From: "Charlotte" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: 06 November, 2007 4:41 PM Subject: Problems with SPSS 15? > Hi there, > > I was just wondering if anybody is experiencing any problems (bugs?) with > SPSS 15? Well, I've had something a little different. Not so much that I can open a file, more that I can't update the file - or even delete it from my network! I get an error message stating a sharing violation and that the destination file is in use, even when I know this is not the case. I can only assume that on a previous occasion the file (created via production mode) wasn't closed properly by SPSS and is hanging. It has proved to be such a pain that I've reverted to version 13 - as even 14 was unstable in performance. It's difficult enough meeting deadlines without having to try to work round glitches in the software. I'm just wondering whether the problems you are experiencing are due to your network and / or the way it is set up. We have used 15 for a year with no problems and that includes all the classroom machines. In fact 15 seems to be less prone to problems than previous versions. We do make sure that we have patched the programme up to the latest patch level as this in the past has sometimes led to strange errors.

Dear all,
Thanks for your responses. I have SPSS 15 installed on my own laptop and am also using a version at work - I have encountered these problems with both, so I am led to believe that it must be a problem associated with the software. Memory is definitely not an issue. I will probably try to contact SPSS about this to see what they say. Are you sure it is SPSS? It might be SAS you are using!

I frequently have SPSS 14 and 15 crash on me, leaving .sav files and even
syntax files unopenable /uneditable. That's where THIS wonderful piece of freeware comes in: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ Unlocker gives you back the access you need instantly. Give it a try if you're troubled by phantom "file in use" messages. -Hank On Tue, 6 Nov 2007 11:47:48 -0000, David Millar <[hidden email]> wrote: >Well, I've had something a little different. Thank you -- I too often get that phantom message.
