I now have ver 21. I installed it and it works like it is supposed to.
However, when I run fixpack 1, SPSS will not launch. It will not work. Has anyone else had this problem? Tech support refuses to look at this because I did not purchase support, but it is clearly their problem, not something I did wrong or something wrong with my pc. Here it is in more detail. As I mentioned, when I first installed SPSS it launched and worked like it is supposed to. I went to IBM's website and downloaded fixpack 1. I download the Client version (the executable file called 21.0-IM-S21STATC-WIN64-FP001.exe). I just now went back into the IBM website and verified that I downloaded what they call the Client version, not the Server version. When I executed the patch it came back with a message telling me that it successfully installed. However, when I launch SPSS the usual IBM dialogue box comes up but it sits there doing nothing for a long time. Then a dialogue box comes up that says "Attempt to connect to a remote server failed inet: Local Computer:0." Then a dialogue box comes up titled "Server Login: Local Computer" that has some options. It appears SPSS is attempting to treat my computer as a server! To learn more about what is going on I did a fresh install of SPSS. First, I removed it (uninstalled it) and deleted the skeleton folder it leaves behind. If I don't delete this skeleton folder (labeled IBM that has the spss subfolder and other subfolders within the spss subfolder), during the installation process it will come up with a message that says "Could not create the Java Virtual machine." After doing a clean install SPSS launches with no problem. However, when I run the patch, I get the same problem all over again I described in the paragraph above. Because SPSS appears to be treating my pc as a server, I am speculating the SPSS programming team has the Server verion instead of the Client version at the download location in IBM's website. Or, the patch program is very shoddily and poorly written. It has nothing to do with my ineptitude or a problem with my pc. Has anyone had this problem? All,
SPSS technical support has helped me on this issue I described below. Essentially, after running the ver 21 patch I could not launch SPSS. SPSS technical support had a suggestion to uninstall ZoneAlarm. I did and now SPSS launches. However, now I cannot use the firewall I have used for years and years, maybe decades, and it is a popular firewall. This is very troublesome to me. I tried to change the ZoneAlarm preferences so it would not launch when I turned on my laptop. That would not work. I noticed there was something called "ZoneAlarm Do Not Track Add-on" in add and remove programs in Control Panel. I uninstalled that and this also did not work. I had to completely uninstall Zonealarm to get SPSS to launch. Has anyone experienced the same thing. Does anyone have a fix so that ZoneAlarm can be used as ones firewall?
