Lou,

have a look at:

Snijders, Tom A.B., Roel J. Bosker (1999): Multilevel Analysis. An
introduction to basic and advanced multilevel modeling. London, Thousand
Oaks, New Delhi: Sage, Chapter 14.

Rabe-Hesketh, Sophia, Anders Skrondal (2005): Multilevel and
Longitudinal Modeling Using Stata. College Station, Texas: Stata Press
(I hope it's ok to post this on the SPSS-List, but in my opinion this is
a good book which deals not only with Stata but also with the
statistical background).

A good website which provides many information on the topic of
multilevel modelling is maintained by the Centre for Multilevel
Modelling: http://www.cmm.bristol.ac.uk/ There you should find further
references.

Lou,

Another excellent source of information on this topic is Raudenbush, S.W.
and Bryk, A.S. (2002). Hierarchical Linear Models (Second Edition). Thousand
Oaks: Sage Publications, 482 pp.   This text covers binomial and multinomial
cases.
