This should have gone to the list, not directly to me.

Not quite sure what you’ve done, but the character ‘:’ is not allowed in variable names.  I suggest you go into Variable View and enter variable names as follows:

Name                   Label                                                                 Values

ID                          Respondent ID

Boys                     Boys in education

Boys1_1               Number of boys in elementary

Boys1_2               Number of boys in high school

Boys1_3               Number of boys in bachelor

Girls                      Girls in education

Girls1_1 Number of girls in elementary

Girls1_2 Number of girls in high school

Girls1_3 Number of girls in bachelor

For variables Boys and Girls enter 1 for Yes and 2 for No in Values

Switch to Data View:

For variables Boys1_1 and Girls1_1 enter actual number.  If None you can enter 0, but if answer to Boys or Girls is “No” you may want to leave them as (system) missing.

It’s much quicker and easier to work in syntax for these basic operations.

You are one of many MBA students expected to complete short term assignments using SPSS.  Hopefully you are one of the few who actually want to learn SPSS programming as well as meet assessment deadlines.

Hope this helps.

Subject: A Question - SPSS

Dear Mr. John,

Hope this email finds you well,

I am working on my MBA thesis and using SPSS for analyzing the data. as far as I am not expert of using SPSS, It would be highly appreciated to have your kind support with advising on the question below:

Some of the questions in my questionnaires designed as below:

Example:

How many of your family members are students/busy in education?

1: Boy

1:1- Elementary (   ) 1:2- High School (    ) 1:3- Bachelor (    )

2: Girl

2:1- Elementary (   ) 2:2- High School (    ) 2:3- Bachelor (    )

So, far such as above question which there are two answers (1 and 2) and these two answers divided into other sub answers (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) HOW CAN I INSERT VALUE LABELS FOR SUB ANSWERS (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 OR 2:1, 2:2 & 2:3)?

In Value field and Syntax I know how to make 1=Boy and 2=Boy, BUT I CAN'T MAKE IT FOR SUB ANSWERS (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3 OR 2:1, 2:2 & 2:3) AS SPSS DOESN'T ACCEPT IT,

In other word, in value field or Syntax I can make it as 1 represent Boy and 2 represent in DATA VIEW, but can not make 1:1 represent Elementary in boy answer OR 2:1 represent elementary in Girl answer and so on...

Thank you in advance for your guidance

Rafi,
