Further to my earlier mail, there's also a fully worked DATA LIST exercise on my website using PASW 18 to read in two variables from a 23-record external data file and perform simple univariate analysis.  The syntax will work on any version of SPSS, but if you're using 18  make sure the primes for the external file are typed in direct, or copied from notepad, not from Word  (PASW turns them into curly quotes and this causes an error)
