Re: From Joy

Nana Nadine
Hi Joy,
The Listserv is a professional network of people sharing ideas and tips on around SPSS software.
If you need any help with statistical analysis, send it to the whole group and someone will give you ideas on how to solve your problem.
Take care,

Nadine Nana, MS

I've received 7 or 8 copies of this so far today.  I would like to know:

a)  Did someone actually farm the list?

b)  How many more spammers are going to be able to retreive our names from
this list?

If the list administrator is listening in, I bet there are others here who
also have questions about this.

Just a note:
Do not reply to spam - EVER

As much as you may like to tell a spammer quite what you think of them - the problem is:

1. They usually send from invalid email addresses - either 'made up' or belonging to someone else.

2. If their address is valid - you will have just confirmed your email address is valid and you may then receive more spam.

Hopefully the listserve administrator has good filter software.

Re: [Spam] from Joy

Richard Ristow
In reply to this post by Mark A Davenport MADAVENP
A spam to SPSSX-L, and maybe other lists and to UGA:

A lot of list members have received a message "From Joy" beginning
something like,

>>Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2008 00:15:55 -0100
>>From: "joy a a" <[hidden email]>
>>Subject: From Joy
>>
>>Hello
>>My name is Joy, I saw your profile today at www.listserv.uga.edu

Yes, it's spam. At 01:33 PM 8/11/2008, Mark A Davenport MADAVENP wrote:

>I've received 7 or 8 copies of this so far today.

I've received four. I notice responses to SPSSX-L; did anyone receive
a copy from the list? I haven't, but the list is distributed by
several servers, with different filtering rules.

>I would like to know:
>a)  Did someone actually farm the list?

The list administrator doesn't monitor the list. But the question
came up a while back, and list administrator Jean Snow wrote then,

>If you sent a posting to the list, and it went out, it'll already
>have been seen a lot of places. It may be possible to remove it from
>the list archives; but I think that the list is shadowed a number of
>places, and it would be hard (or impossible) to remove your posting
>from all of them.

So, more or less, it's easy to get at full archives of the list,
including all addresses. This one looks like it is from harvesting
lists hosted at UGA (there are several), since it includes "I saw
your profile at www.listserv.uga.edu". Not very smart harvesting,
luckily, since hardly any of us are at UGA.

But, Jean, I'll bet this hit people who ARE at UGA, too. On the face
of it, it isn't as dangerous as the recent phish, but you certainly
want to know.

-Best regards,
  Richard Ristow
