Re: New to SPSS -output format, split variables and labels

karen.knight@ncmail.net
Hi all,

I have a relatively simple assignment for a class (frequencies by one
site variable), and I'm new to SPSS.  My questions seem like they would
have simple answers, but I cannot seem to find them:

Output format - I used split variables to run the frequencies by
site.  These produce a footnote on every frequency table, identifying
the value of the split variable for that table.  Is there any way to
get rid of these?  Or to run the frequencies in a simple way, other
than using the split variable?

Labels -  The data set has a number of variables with categorical
responses, i.e., 1 for yes and 2 for no.  But they are unlabeled, and
when I go into the variable view, the label for many of these variables
is grayed out and reads, "None".  When I click on the label box, it
won't let me type into the box.  Any idea why these might be grayed out
and unchangeable?  Does anyone know a workaround?

Frequencies - When running frequencies, is there a way to turn off the
display of cumulative percent?  That's not something my audience will
need to see.

Thanks in advance!
Karen

If you run a crosstab instead of a frequency with split file, you will
be able to limit what is displayed (last question--see the /Cells
subcommand) and you will get all the information in one table (first
question).  Note the first variable listed in the crosstab command is
the rows, the second is the columns--this can be changed in pivot
tables, but is easier if you start out the way you want it).

Not sure about your labels issue, but can you enter labels using syntax?
Var labels <varname> 'label'.
Val labels <varname> value 'label'.
