Kathleen,
I also meant to add that one can purchase the SPSS training manuals (or, at
least one could at one time). There are several of these devoted to syntax
and related topics. A motivated student could work through these.
This also relates to the question Hans Zhu asked about conjoint analysis,
which I assume can still only be done by SPSS using syntax. The training
manual would make clear what types of conjoint analysis can be done by SPSS,
and would provide the syntax that would be quite easy to imitate.
As of about about two years ago, specialized conjoint packages could employ
a wider range of techniques than SPSS. However, SPSS would likely meet the
needs of most users.
