Re: SPSS 20 on 64 bit machine refuses to use 32 bit ODBC connection

On a Windows Server 2008 machine (64 bit) I did the homework and set up the 32 bit connection to an Adaptive Server Anywhere (ASA) 9.0 database driver to a 32-bit database.  I used the syswow64 version of the ODBC administrator and tested the connection and the test comes back “connection successful” for both a user and system DSN.  I can connect to the database from MS Access (2003) using what it calls a “machine source” perfectly.  When I use the SPSS ODBC wizard, it shows me the ODBC connection I set up, but no matter what I try, when I attempt to open it I get an “architecture mismatch” error.  This only happens when I try to access the 32 bit ODBC connection from the 64 bit ODBC manager, so I must conclude that SPSS is using the default 64-bit ODBC manager instead of the 32 bit one.  How do I tell  / force / indicate to SPSS to use the 32 bit connection AND ODBC manager?

This is a known limitation, although it might not have been known at the time release 20 came out. 

You cannot use 32-bit ODBC drivers with the 64-bit version of SPSS Statistics.

My MIS dept. states that my SPSS 20 is 32 bit .. is there a way to check/confirm this?

Good question. I can't access a version of SPSS Statistics right now, but you could try Help>About or in a syntax window run the command SHOW ALL. One of those might contain that information.

If it's installed in the default location, it's going to be in C:\Program Files (x86) if it's the 32-bit version.

Starting with V21, I think, the bit-size was added to the About box.  It is harder to tell with V20.  However, if you want to zip up the stats.exe module in your Statistics installation directory and send it to me, I can use a special tool to find out which it is.  Send it to [hidden email]
