Re: SPSS Data Entry Query

Catherine Lisles
Dear SPSS-L list members,
Simple queries.

When entering data directly into the SPSS Data Editor using the numeric key pad, the user must ensure that the view is set on Values and not on Value Labels - otherwise incorrect values are entered. For example, entering the number 2 will lead to '22' appearing.
Has anyone else come across this and found a solution?

Secondly, many years ago, probably with version 16 of SPSS and earlier, it was possible to use the enter key on the numeric keypad to go across the rows. Now, the enter key only allows the user to move down columns and the tab or right cursor arrow key needs to be used instead. This means the user has to adopt a strange hand position and use the right thumb on the right cursor arrow key causing strain, or use two hands with the tab key.
Again, has anyone else come across this and found a solution?
- There used to be an option to switch the enter key from down the column to across the rows (this is going back to the days of the dos based systems), but, I do not think that this is there now?

With many thanks, Cathy

Re: SPSS Data Entry Query

On the first question, there have been a number of tweaks to the behavior of data view entry with value labels turned on as this is a tricky area.  You might want to check to see whether there is a fixpack for your version of Statistics to see if that affects the behavior.  (See https://developer.ibm.com/predictiveanalytics/downloads/ to check.)

As for direction, I find that tab works pretty well to go across rather than the cursor key, but there is no option for how the Enter key moves the focus.
