From what I have been able to determine from online resources, here's a brief history of the first SPSS manual: (1) There was a "provisional" SPSS manual that was copyrighted in 1969. The WorldCat catalog has an entry for this but does not identify where it was published. See: (2) The First Edition of the officially published SPSS manual was in 1970 and McGraw-Hill was the publisher of record. WorldCat lists a variety of university libraries that appear to contain this edition (though I fear that library reconds may not distinguish among different every versions of the first edition). Google Books has an entry for the 1970 1st edition but it only allows a snippet view of contents (Google has an electronic version of the manual but it is not publicly available due to copyright restriction; the HathiTrust also has an electronic version which has similar access restrictions). Google Books does have an image for the cover but it is unclear that this is the actual cover; one would have to match it to a printed copy. Here is a link to the Google Books entry: (3) Norman Nie did his doctoral work at Stanford University (see his obituary on the SU website at https://news.stanford.edu/2015/05/08/norman-nie-obit-050815/ ) and it was there where he and graduate student Dale Bent and Stanford alumnus C. Hadlai “Tex” Hull created SPSS. Checking the card catalog at the Stanford library one will find several early SPSS manuals: (a) A 1970 loose-leaf version of the first edition manual; see: (b) A 1970 book version of the first edition manual; see: NOTE: Both of the above have an image of what looks like the cover but the initial S in SPSS is missing. (c) A 1971 loose-leaf version of an update to the SPSS manual (NOTE: published in Chicago's NORC); see: (d) A 1973 loose-lear version of something call SPSSQ (I believe this was for a specific operating system) and was published at Stanford; see: (4) 1975 copies of the 2nd edition of the SPSS manual and the first edition of the SPSS Primer manual; see entries 13-15 in the list of book entries at the Stanford library: Note that almost all of the early manuals were published either by McGraw-Hill or by Stanford University; only the 1971 looseleaf update appears to have published at Chicago's
National Opinion Research Center (appears to be a limited circulation document).
