Well, it took some voodoo - using the X and Y axis properties dialog boxes
in the chart editor, I deselected the "Display axis title" box (it was
selected to begin with), hit apply, then re-selected the box, apply, and
there it appeared, the text "Y Axis", which I could then edit.
