Related to some recent rants, came across this blog post this morning and figured would pass along to the group. It includes a pamphlet for SPSS (Version ?) for Windows 3.0.
SPSS looked great! 20 years ago... |

Shudder ;-( That brings back memories (mostly horrific ones).
I suspect that is version 5 circa 1991 maybe 1992. At that time I was a technical support rep at SPSS (thankless job at best). Sir/Maam... I am afraid that I can NOT teach you how to use Windows over the phone. That was a nightmare trying to deal with all the various incompatibility issues. Try walking an ultra-noob through the process of editing a configuration file so the install envt is vanilla. Yeah, too much fun! I ended up wearing out the mute button on my phone after awhile (yeah, must not let the customer hear profanity! ;-) Ironically, the powerhouse PC desktop product at that time was SPSS 4.1 for OS2 . I supported that and rarely had ANY problems. VERY STABILE. Of course OS/2-Warp is a long dead product. There was also a Mac product, but that was it's own ugly hornet's nest. It wasn't until 6.1.4 that SPSS for Windows became remotely stabile IMNSHO. "Real Stats-Real Easy" ....Yeah? Gotta love the people in the Marketing department.

Wow! Bringing back the memories for me too (though not horrific, like poor David) of undergrad/grad days. Thanks for sharing. That is great! Interesting. Prior to doing the teksport gig I had only used SPSS on a mainframe.
No GUI, straight syntax. When I first saw SPSS/PC+ and SPSS for OS2 I thought WOW, pretty cool. OTOH: I was hired to do stat support and had never done any file merging, aggregate, Macros, complex file stuff, date wrangling, odd ball data restructuring etc...Learned a lot by answering user's questions (got broadsided when I suddenly (overnight) became the data-meister/macro dude/odd ball DR guy -The person previously in charge of that had transferred to a different dept and suddenly I inherited the 'curse' -nobody else wanted to touch any of that stuff with a 20 foot pole ;-). Probably many people on this list picked up macros and crazy data tricks from stuff I posted in the early 90's . "Real Stats-Real Easy" leaves out A LOT: "Real Data-Real Chaos" (for one thing ;-)
