Recoding String to String

Shannon Deike
I am recoding numbers that are coded as string to a string that has the
description.

I receive an error code when it is run:

191 RECODE The preceding RECODE specifies a value to be recoded that
is longer than some variable(s) in the recode.  The shorter values will be
padded with blanks for the comparison.  Text: )

The data is processed and the new variable name is created but I want to
be rid of the error code. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Shannon

STRING FacilityName (A75).
RECODE FacilityCode ('2'='Seaview Community Services') ('3'='Railbelt
Mental Health & Addictions') ('5'='Providence Valdez Counseling Center')
('7'='Gastineau Human Services, Corp.') ('8'='Youth Advocates of Sitka')
('9'='Sitka Counseling and Prevention Services') ('11'='Tok Area

Compare databases

Mike Pritchard
Is there a (relatively) easy way to compare SPSS files?

I am trying to correct a problem that has crept in where at least one
variable has got messed up.  I need to figure out how far back in the
versions I need to go, and whether I can simply replace that variable with
the original from the Excel file that was downloaded from the survey tool.
If I can't just replace the variable in a later version of the SPSS file
there is probably quite a bit more work to recode again, and - more
important - checking / redoing coding from open-ends.

I'm doing spot checks right now, but it would be great to find a way to test
the integrity of multiple variables.

Thanks
Mike

It looks like you left "INTO FacilityName" off the end of your RECODE
statement.

Re: Compare databases

In reply to this post by Mike Pritchard
it can be easily done if one has SPSS data entry (builder) module. It allows for very easy transformation of two  regular spss data files into "builder" files and then has a very nice and easy way to compare the two files and to produce a user-friendly report.

Now, with the code unwrapped, it's clear: the string '12-14' is longer than the A2 variable that's being recoded. No FacilityCode value can match it.

Perhaps you meant

Re: Compare databases - Can't run Python module

Mike Pritchard

This sounds like a good tool, and gave me a reason to try the Python modules from SPSSINC.

But I can't get the COMPDS module to run.    I tried with another downloaded module and had the same results.  (Restarted SPSS after each module installed).

Extension command  COMPDS  could not be loaded. The module or a module that it requires may be missing, or there may be syntax errors in it.

I'm running SPSS V16 on Vista.

Thanks

Mike

Hi,

Does Spss know where to find the downloaded .py files? The default place is:
C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages

(or maybe Python25...)

Cheers!!

Dear all,

I was curious about this Python module, but I cannot download it. I get the error:

500 Error Executing Database Query.

Error Executing Database Query.

Isn't it available anymore? Is there a problem with the site?

TIA!

Re: Compare databases

Jon K Peck

There appears to be a temporary problem with the Developer Central website.  I have filed a trouble report with our IT folks.  We'll get it back asap.

Sorry for the problem.
