Reference lines in scatterplot

Αντώνης Χωριανόπουλος
Hi all,

I was hoping for a little help on this!

I try to create a scatter plot using GPL with 2 reference lines (one in X
and one in Y axis) added using GPL syntax. Is there a way to do this?

Thank you very much in advance

Re: Reference lines in scatterplot

ViAnn Beadle
Within GPL itself, there is no way to add a reference line. You can add
reference lines via a template and I seem to recall somebody posted a method
of building a calculated reference line entry in a .sgt file sometime ago.
You'll be able to find it by searching through archive of postings at

http://www.listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?S1=spssx-l

It's very easy to create a template file with a static reference line in the
chart editor if that is what you want:

1. Edit your scatterplot within the chart editor by adding reference lines.
2. Go to the File menu to create a template select the checkbox for
reference lines and then save the template somewhere.
3. You can then point this template in the GGRAPH syntax.

Re: Reference lines in scatterplot

ViAnn Beadle
I just found out that reference lines are implemented in 16 via the GUIDE:
form.line type.

Re: Reference lines in scatterplot

Keith McCormick
Hi All,

Here is some syntax pulled from an example I did in 16.0:

The first one show a reference line at a constant value of 20. The *
is important and was hard to figure out. This is 16,0 only.

GUIDE: form.line(position(*,20), color(color.green) )

This second example is a line at the mean. Again smooth.mean is an
important detail that missed at first. I think? that this works in
15.0 too.

ELEMENT: line(position(smooth.mean(weight*mpg)), color(color.blue) )

I didn't delete the colors, but it was just a test.

I hope that helps someone.

Best, Keith
