Renaming variables

stace swayne
 Dear list,

I am working with a data set that has 3 time points (time point one)1994-5, (time point two)1997-9, and (time point three) 2000-1.

I would like to rename my variables to reflect their specific time points, for instance,
work1 (are you currently employed time point one), work2 (are you currently employed time point two). Currently all of the data is lumped together and the only way to discern responses by time point is to split the file.

Is there a way to rename the variables to reflect their specific time points without manually inserting the specific time point number behind each variable?

All suggestions are appreciated
Thanks,

Stace

Re: Renaming variables

Norton, John
Hi Stace,

It sounds like you have a variable to record the value of work, and another variable recording time (1, 2 or 3).  If that's correct, you can restructure your data as you require by using the Data Restructuring Wizard in SPSS.

To access this functionality, open your data set and then from the menu, choose Data > Restructure...  Be sure to choose the option to restructure selected cases to variables.

The command to restructure your variables as you indicated is the "CASESTOVARS" command.  You can find a more detailed discussion about this command under Help > Command Syntax Reference..  and browse the list of commands alphabetically to locate the CASESTOVARS command.

HTH,
