Repeated Measures GLM Data Arrangements & Assumptions

Glenys Lafrance
Dear SPSS Users,

I am attempting a repeated measures analysis.  The topic is:  Does self-
efficacy change over time?  Do results vary depending on the individual?
or subscale? or individual X subscale?
. measurements taken at three time intervals
. self-efficacy self-report instrument has 25 items (5 subscales with 5
items each).
. 10 cases

Is it appropriate to stack data vertically thus:
. total 250 rows (Cases X instrument items)
 . 6 columns (Case ID/QuestionID/ScaleID/Time1/Time2/Time3)

This data arrangement produces insightful plots of
 . average score X time
. average scale score X time
 . average score X individual X time
. average scale score X individual X time

Will results the RM-GLM within-subjects F stats be valid, given that there
are 25 different items contributing to the overall result for each time
period?  Are between-subject results compromised?

If I do not want to see the effects of "individual", I can arrange the
data in a more conventional horizontal manner and analyse each of the 25
items X time separately.  However, there is an interest in each
individual's progress.

Kind regards,

Glenys Lafrance, Ph.D.
