SEM text using AMOS

Paola Chivers-2
HI,

I am about to undergo training in Structural Equation Modelling using AMOS
in SPSS.  I have a health science background and need to purchase a good
practical approach text(s) (rather than mathematical text).

Below are some options.  Any advice for or against or other options would be
greatly appreciated.

Kline, R. B. (2005). Principles and practice of structural equation modeling
(2nd Edn.). NY: The Guilford Press

Bollen, K. A. (1989). Structural equations with latent variables. NY: John
Wiley & Sons.

SPSS 17

Donna Alden-Bugden
Just signed up to this list 10 minutes ago so this topic may have been
discussed in the recent past (but I don't see any SPSS-L archives to
search). I just bought SPSS 17 and I'm wondering if anyone has used it
yet...any obvious bugs or idiosyncrasies about the software that we should
be aware of. My package is not shipping until Sept 17th.

Re: SEM text using AMOS

Johnny Amora
One should consider the version of the AMOS used in the book.  For example, the book published in 2001 used the version 4.0 of AMOS. What do you think are the difference between AMOS version 4.0 and the present version during training?Cheers!Johnny

All,

I will be obtaining spss files from somebody who did analyses using a
(recent, let's say) version of spss on a (recent, let's say) mac. I know
that version specifics are needed to give a specific answer but I don't know
them at present. What trouble will I have bringing the file types over to an
microsoft OS computer?

Thanks, Gene Maguin

Roberts, Michael

If you are reading in text data, and some of your variables are strings,
ver. 17 has the ability detect the string length.  However, depending on
the data, there may be cases where a string length over 14 is identified
incorrectly - based on direct experience.

Re: SEM text using AMOS

In reply to this post by Paola Chivers-2
Thank you to everyone that replied - it has helped me make a decision.

Here is a summary of the feedback I received regarding SEM texts, plus some
correspondence with Prof Byrne regarding amos versions.  Overwhelmingly,
Prof Byrne's text was recommended and the text I am ordering, along with the
Kline book - recommended reference by my SEM trainer.

Also look at Barbara Byrne's SEM book. It's very computational friendly and
lots of pragmatic advice on solutions.

Bollen is 'the Bible' but pretty heavy going.  Loehlin J.C, Latent Variable

Garry Gelade.

I have the Kline book and another called SEM with Amos by Barbara Byrne. I
would recommend the Byrne book.

    Best,

       Lisa

I like the "Structural Equation Modeling with Amos - Basic Concepts,
Applications, and Programming"" by Barbara M. Byrne. Multivariate
Application Series, Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers, 2001.

In response to a query regarding AMOS versions to Prof. Byrne:

There is no problem re the version used in the 2001 book as nothing has
really changed in the program with respect to all applications in the book.
For example, I am currently working on a 2nd edition of the book using AMOS
16 and there is nothing different re the results. The only change relates to
the layout and presentation of the output file. Since AMOS has been taken
over by SPSS, the version numbers have changed each year in order that they
match the SPSS program. However, I have been advised by the developer of
AMOS that program remains intact. If you do decide to work with AMOS, it is
important that I advise you that my original publisher was bought out by
Taylor & Francis in December, 2006. As a consequence, the website for
obtaining the data has changed to:
http://www.researchmethodsarena.com/resources/amos.zip
