SPSS 14.x to SPSS 15.x

John White
All,

My campus is changing over to 15. I've been asked to try and identify
any issues we are likely to encounter.  I'm looking for something on
SPSS's website that shows the differences, and not just checkboxes.  I
need to know file structures, permissions, changes to base, advanced,
tables, etc.

I'm also asking whether you as a community felt the upgrade was worth
it. SPSS licenses are not cheap and we're quite willing to wait a bit
longer and continue to use 14.

Thank you all for any assistance you can provide.

Re: SPSS 14.x to SPSS 15.x

Lemon, John S.
John

We moved to 15 for staff late last year and so far I have heard nothing
but praise for it, once it had been patched to 15.0.1 as one or two
people had encountered the problems resolved by the patch. As we
re-build the student classroom machines once a year during the summer
vacation they will be moving to 15 next academic year in September and
we forsee no problems there with files etc.

The good bits are the new graphs ( including Mult Response graphs ) and
all the other added features. We will be moving staff to 16 as soon as
it is released. You could wait 6 months and 'leapfrog' 15 and go direct
to 16 with it's new additions etc.

Best Wishes

Re: SPSS 14.x to SPSS 15.x

JW,
That's an issue that's been debated on the list of late (e.g., this
thread:
http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0702&L=spssx-l&P=R17005).
Searching the listserv archives at
http://listserv.uga.edu/archives/spssx-l.html may provide some insight.

We moved our shop over to v.15 a few months ago and have had no problems
whatsoever. The improvements in Python alone have made my life easier,
and the other users in my office appreciate the improvements in DATASET
functionality. We haven't noticed any problems with performance, but
some users on the list have reported such (see, for example, this
thread: http://listserv.uga.edu/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0701&L=spssx-l&P=R9792)
. The only glitch we have had is with the odd system files showing up in
some directories, which was annoying but easy to remedy.

Hope this helps,
Dan R.

Re: SPSS 14.x to SPSS 15.x

Hi John

SPSS v15 is significantly slower for me.

As an example, a relatively simple run to read in a flat text file with
about 4k variables and 5k cases, assign labels, do some
recoding/renaming, and save out a system file takes 3 minutes on v13,
and about 13 minutes on v15.  Tested both on the same machine, and
separately on two identical machines, same results

Your mileage may vary - only some users are reporting speed differences

Craig

The speed issue has been noted several times.  I use a networked version
of 15 here at work and a personal license copy at home.  I have had no
speed issues to speak of.
