SPSS 15.0.1 performance issues

Simon Phillip Freidin
I'm finding my production jobs take 3 times as long with 15.0.1 cf
14. Has anyone else noticed substantial performance issues?

Re: SPSS 15.0.1 performance issues

Cathie Atkinson
Yes, I just installed it a couple of days ago and I estimate the same
decrement in speed.  I have 4 MB memory so it's not the machine.  I'm
also getting out of memory notices after a couple of hours and/or it
locks up and I have to restart.  Very frustrating!

SPSS 15.0.1 performance issues

Victor Kogler
And another thing . . .

Not really a performance issue, but after installing the 15.0.1 patch,
my data, syntax and output windows do not open up in a maximized state.
For years, and with multiple previous versions of SPSS, I just opened a
file and it filled the screen.  Now I get little windows that I have to
maximize manually.  This was not a problem with Version 15.0.

A small thing, but a constant irritant.  Does anyone have any thoughts
on dealing with this?

Thanks

Beadle, ViAnn
The window state is stored in the Windows registry. For some reason it is not being stored or retrieved correctly on your installation. Maybe somebody else has an idea why this is happening.

Yes - I have noticed a substantial decrease in performance with 15.0 and
even more with 15.0.1

Can those having this issue explain a bit more so I can update development
in a manner that they can address: Is it starting SPSS, running an
application, loading data, spool file, etc, please be as specific as
possible.

My system has is relatively "average" with a 2.4GHz P4 and 512 of RAM and I
am *not* noticing anything significantly different from recent prior
versions.

Re: SPSS 15.0.1 performance issues

Simon Phillip Freidin
Hi William

I run a series of data management programs using batch and production
job mode overnight.

The first program, which took 4 minutes using SPSS 14 took 12 minutes
under 15.0.1.

Running the whole data management sequence under 14 was 11 hours
(including some non-SPSS tasks), but took around 18 hours under 15.0.1.

Anyway, I restored 14 and the run times are back to where they were.

cheers
Simon

Re: SPSS 15.0.1 performance issues

zstatman
Simon, what are the file sizes - average size? Though I don't use the
production module too often one aspect of such jobs is the use of the
execute command. When used, SPSS generally has to re-read the entire dataset
so if too many and the dataset is very large then a slow down will exist.
However, I believe this would also occur in V14 so there must be something
different in the versions running your jobs.

I am awaiting feedback from a couple of other users, perhaps there is
something in common.

Cheers,
W

Re: SPSS 15.0.1 performance issues

I run syntax programs over the course of 5 -6 hours.  Most of them
process Excel files and concat to a larger file, although a good
portion are analyses.  Particular hang-ups seem to be apply
dictionary and match file commands.  Performance seems to decrease
steadily until I exit spss which makes me think that something is
locking up memory.  I have 4000 memory so that shouldn't be an
issue.  Also I am working with multiple studies so it's not uncommon
to have multiple data windows open, but I didn't have this problem
with 14.  Any suggestions/solutions are appreciated! - Cathie

Pair down for complex survey in SPSS- Albertorio NCHS, CDC

Albertorio, Juan R. (CDC/CCHIS/NCHS)
Greetings! I have the following questions.

For a complex survey I need to include the physician level weight. For
do that, I need to identify a single record per physician rather than
multiple records per physician.

Here is how they do it in SAS proc sort data=namvis nodupkey; by
phycode; run;

But I wonder how I can do the same procedure in SPSS.

Any help is deeply appreciated.

Juan :)

Not that different in SPSS. It takes few more lines, and leaves the
variable "One_Doc" in your file. This code, like the SAS code, gives
you one of the records for each physician; but there's no telling
*which* one. If that matters (likely enough), you've been warned. (If
you just want a record for each physician, with the ID but no data,
there's a very quick SPSS solution using AGGREGATE.)

Code not tested. It assumes the data file is loaded.

SORT CASES BY phycode.
ADD FILES
    /FILE=*
    /BY physcode
    /FIRST=One_Doc.
SELECT IF One_Doc EQ 1.
