SPSS 15 scatterplot with subgroup lines--how??

I am running SPSS 15.0.1 on Windows XP and am a statistician, not a
computer person.

I am trying to do a simple scatterplot using employee.sav with salary
(Y) vs. salbegin (X) with markers jobcat. Then editing the plot, I add
lines at subgroups (jobcat). I print in black and white, so have
edit/options for charts set to cycle through patterns. In SPSS before
15, this worked fine.

In SPSS 15, I can’t get this to work in the legacy graphs or chart
builder. I didn't get anywhere in interactive.

With Legacy graphs (and edit/options set to cycle through patterns), the
subgroup lines are surrounded by blue (chosen), but are not visible
(?white?). When I close, they are not there. If I click to choose one of
them to change the color to black, the other two disappear into the
background. However, if I have edit/options set to cycle through colors,
the subgroup lines are there and stay there when I close the editor.

With the new chart builder (with edit/options set to cycle through
patterns), the points come up in different patterns, but when I added
the subgroup lines, the lines come up in color and I could not change
them by choosing one and trying to change color, type or weight!

Any ideas?
