Re: SPSS 19

John F Hall
I've been using SPSS since 1972 and 19 since early this year.  No bugs in
the bits I use (almost exclusively in syntax mode). It's prettier than 11,
15 and 18 which I had before.  Can't speak for complex statistical
procedures, only for file design and management, tabulation, basic stats and
some graphics. I use it mostly for writing and testing tutorials on
processing and analysing data from questionnaire surveys, and occasionally
for secondary analysis of past surveys (eg Quality of Life in Britain,
British Social Attitudes, European Social Survey) or for replicating and
checking examples in SPSS textbooks I've reviewed (eg Pallant 2010, Babbie
et al 2011).  All tutorials, comments etc (and more) are on my website and
everything is available for free download.

Biggest bug was negotiating a new academic author licencing and registration
agreement with IBM/SPSS, but that eventually got sorted.  Biggest drag is
having to update tutorials to take account of any changes, especially
screenshots.

Re: SPSS 19

Lemon, John S.

I agree with John about 19 being better than previous versions although I’ve only been using SPSS since 1975 ! I have been a beta tester for a number of years and can say that 19 was more robust and reliable than previous versions; it was also faster. I have just finished testing 20 and that is better still; I’m really looking forward to using some of the new features for real.

Just make sure that you patch 19 to the latest version as it removes a couple of strange features

Best Wishes

Re: SPSS 19

Ryan
In reply to this post by Howard Schuman
Well, I think there's a bug in the GENLINMIXED procedure. I recently
attempted to employ a random effects binomial model with a logit link
where the dependent variable was the number of events over the total
number of trials. This was sparked from a recent discussion in the
SPSS google newsgroup. Anyway, I simulated some data and tried to fit
the model and kept getting an error message about the target variable
not having a reference. When I removed the random effect component,
the error message disappeared. Not sure what to make of it. Could be
an error on my part since I rarely use GENLINMIXED, but it could also
be a bug.
