SPSS 21 output file change

Poes, Matthew Joseph

Hi Everyone,

                I sent an SPSS .SPV output file to a colleague at another university, and they noted being unable to see the output.  Something about the data file being missing.  I sent it to them as a PDF instead, which of course solved the issue, but I consider that a temporary solution.  I’ve only briefly attempted to resolve this issue, but it appears the output is now dynamically attached to the data files, is this correct?  When I use syntax, if I change LOCK=NO to LOCK=YES, it appears to fix the problem, but I’m not actually sure, as I would haven’t been able to check off campus yet.

                If it is dynamically connected now, what are the implications in terms of moving the data or output files around?  Sending them to other people?  Etc?  Thanks in advance.

Hey Matthew, I send .SPV files to my boss all the time, and have no such problems.  Re lock/unlock, I go with the default, which is unlocked, if I'm not mistaken.  And he typically does not have the data files on his laptop.

Both of us are running version  20.0.0.1 for Windoze.

Cheers,
Bruce

Bruce, what about 21, if you have it?  I have 20 and there is no mention of 'lock' in the CSR (aka, FM). Matthew has 21. Matthew, what the help/documentation say about 'lock'?

Re: SPSS 21 output file change

Poes, Matthew Joseph
It actually looks like Lock is for something else, Locking the ability to change the viewer.  I believe this is something else.  I'm not sure.  This problem appears to be new to version 21, not 20.  We change within 3-6 months of the new versions coming out now, and I had not had this problem before.  I've really not done a lot of investigation into the problem.  I made sure the problem was repeatable before posting it here, but beyond that, I figured I might get a quicker response from you guys, rather than the help documents.  I figured Jon would know, if anyone, and might post.  Maybe it's not a "problem" and something unique to my situation.

I guess I was most interested to know if the tables were in fact dynamically linked to the output files now?  We sometimes use old output files as a way to check if some unexpected change was made to a data file, and if the old output files will now dynamically change with changes to the data file, I would want to know this so I can change our practice.

In reply to this post by Maguin, Eugene
Ok well now I feel stupid.  I think the problem was just a version compatibility problem, as the SPSS website says that .spv files are not backward compatible, and the colleague I was working with has version 20 (Which I didn't realize or think about when I sent the original request).  I'll assume that is the issue and there has been no new dynamic connection issue.

Re: SPSS 21 output file change

Hi Gene.  I don't have access to v21 -- we're always a version behind here (out in the wilderness).  ;-)

But even in v20 of the FM, I find this entry for OUTPUT SAVE:

OUTPUT SAVE [NAME={* }]
 {name}
 OUTFILE='file specification'
 [TYPE={SPV**}]
 (SPW }
 [LOCK={NO**}
 {YES }

LOCK Keyword

Use LOCK=YES to prevent editing of Viewer documents in IBM(R) SPSS(R) Smartreader (a separate product for working with Viewer documents). If a Viewer document is locked, you can manipulate pivot tables (swap rows and columns, change the displayed layer, etc.) but you cannot edit any output or save any changes to the Viewer document in SPSS Smartreader. This setting has no effect on Viewer documents opened in SPSS Statistics. The default is LOCK=NO.

Matthew, what is your colleague using to view the output file, SPSS or Smartreader?

I was about to ask that, because SmartReader 21 erroneously warns about incompatibilties between SmartReader 21 and non-v21 .spv files.
The warning itself is a bug though. Maybe there is yet another bug.
