Hi,
we are using SPSS 22 in our computer pools for teaching students in statistics. We are using XUbuntu 12.4 (Debian derivate) as operating system. SPSS crashes frequently, i.e. in a seminar (90 minutes) with 20 students it crashes on 19 computers at least once. IBM commented that XUbuntu is not on the list of certified OS. Meanwhile we systematically varied hardware and operating systems: SPSS 22 with fixpack1 crashes even on a Debian 6 system (recommended OS by IBM), on Debian 7 it doesn't run at all. It doesn't matter which graphic card, graphic driver, desktop (e.g. KDE or xfce) or java version was installed.
The problem is somewhere in the GUI: mouse activity in the output (particularly scrolling) and use of menus freezes all SPSS windows (Data Viewer, Syntax and Output Viewer). Looking more deeply we can see that the SPSS kernel is still running but the eclipse GUI crashed. Using "killall -9 STATISTICS" helps but is not satisfying...
IBM support is quite semifluid, I would appreciate any help. Next Tuesday I have to teach again 45 students who are fighting with crashing SPSS rather than with statistics.
Greetings
Andreas
