Every time I boot SPSS at home my firewall tells me that it is asking permission to (1) connect to the Internet and (2) act as a server. If I deny (1) SPSS shuts down. It will run if I allow (1) and deny (2).
What is SPSS up to? I expect this sort of behavior from spyware, not statsware. ________________________________________ Karl L. If you are using your laptop from work, I would guess it is the way SPSS was installed on your laptop - possibly looking for a license verification or system config.
If so, run it by your IT dept. My desktop, at home. Our license allows us to run SPSS from home. The
folks at IT were unaware that SPSS connects to the Internet every time it is booted. SPSS is not calling home, but does require access to certain ports for the program to communicate with the license manager. For instance, Port 5093 UDP for a basic network license setup.

Hallo,
why SPSS searches a license server although running a local installation? Already Version 12 'called home', strange. I investigated further and found that the firewall was asking for permission to send to IP. 127.0.0.1, which is the "loopback address" - that is, data directed here loops back to the host computer. My guess is that SPSS wants to go here so that it can access network services on the host computer. In other words, it is not calling home after all.
I confirmed this by disconnecting the network cable from my PC and trying to boot SPSS. If I told SPSS to allow connection to the loopback address, all went well, but if I denied permission then SPSS told me "Attempt to connect to a remote server failed inet:Local Computer:0." That warning is a bit misleading, as the "remote computer" is the host PC. Dear SPSSers , I am trying to simulate clinical trial data, I don't want all the output, just the regression coefficients from a logistic regression dumped into an SPSS file for later treatment. Having just discovered OMS, I tried the code below, which works fine. One question, I don't want any of the output at all, this code just suppresses the table that I want to save, so my question is what do I add into my OMS command to have no output whatsoever. (I only want the final estimates also, but as this is simple I am prepared to have all iterations in there)
I am using SPSS 16. Many thanks, Graeme. ********************************** OMS /SELECT TABLES /IF COMMANDS=['Logistic Regression'] SUBTYPES=['Variables in the Equation'] /DESTINATION FORMAT=SAV NUMBERED=TableNumber_ OUTFILE='T:\logreg' VIEWER=NO. Just add the following OMS command before the one that selects the tables:
OMS SELECT ALL /DESTINATION VIEWER=NO. So, the whole thing looks like this: OMS SELECT ALL /DESTINATION VIEWER=NO. OMS /SELECT TABLES /IF COMMANDS=['Logistic Regression'] SUBTYPES=['Variables in the Equation'] /DESTINATION FORMAT=SAV NUMBERED=TableNumber_ OUTFILE='T:\logreg'. LOGISTIC REGRESSION VARIABLES birth /METHOD=ENTER so_iui ivf /PRINT=CI(95) /CRITERIA=PIN(0.05) POUT(0.10) ITERATE(20) CUT(0.5). OMSEND. Note that the single OMSEND command applies to all preceding OMS requests. Also not that I removed "VIEWER=NO" from your OMS command, since all Viewer output is now suppressed by the preceding OMS command. -----Original Message----- From: SPSSX(r) Discussion [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Maclennan, Graeme S. So the software is not sending encrypted packets of information to a
satellite, via an anonymous router, about softwaqre usage or the data that I am analyzing?
